Dil insana özgü bir olgu olduğu için onu insan faktöründen ayırıp tek başına analiz etmek doğru olmaz. Dil, bireylerin toplum içinde birbirleri ile iletişim kurmak için kullandığı bir araçtır. Bu aracı kullanırken bireyler kendi deneyimleri sonucu edindikleri dil bilgilerinden yararlanırlar. Ayrıca, sözel veya yazılı elde ettikleri bilgileri kafalarında depolayıp gerektiğinde bunları kendi dil bilgileri çerçevesinde yeniden söze dökerken kişiye özgü bazı psikolojik, nörolojik, fizyolojik olgulardan yararlanırlar. Bundan başka, dil, sosyal bir toplumun iletişim aracı olduğu müddetçe onu toplumdan ayırmanın imkanı yoktur. Bir çocuk doğduğu sosyal toplumun dilini iki yıl içinde öğrenir. Bu dil öğrenimi sırasında geçirdiği deneyimler de dilden ayrı tutulamaz.

Dilin psikoloji, sosyoloji, nöroloji, eğitim alanlarına yakınlığını belirtmek ve dilin, öğrenim teorileri ve öğrenim biçimleri, düşünce, iletişim, hatırlama gibi konular ile ilişkisini irdelemek ve bu konularda yapılan çalışmaları dile getirmek amacı ile bu kitap yazılmıştır. Kitap psikodilbilim dersinde ders kitabı olarak kullanılmak üzere hazırlanmıştır. Yazım dili Türkçe olmasına rağmen yabancı dil eğitimi programlarında yardımcı ders kitabı olarak kullanılmasında büyük yarar vardır. Bu şekilde öğrenciler, yabancı dilde edindikleri terminolojinin Türkçe karşıtlarını da öğrenme fırsatı bulacaktır.
